Microscope -
PM-1
(With 4.6 Lakhs Pixel Resolution)
Portable metallurgical microscope, PM-1, is
available with 100X and 400X magnification. It is a very versatile microscope,
which can be used in any position and location. PM-1 is provided with incident
light source, which gives enough brightness for comfortable and clear viewing.
It has a 6V bulb with tungsten battery eliminator having stepped control for
changing out put voltage from 3 V to 12 V enabling you to increase the
brightness. However it is advised that voltages in excess of 6 V should not be
used for more than 5 minutes at a time since the bulb may fuse. Replacement
bulbs are available at automobile spares shop
The microscope is ready for use.
First try to focus on prepared surface to
ensure that everything is in order. If you are seeing only a partial image then
rotate the light source on its own axis till you get a full view. One way of
doing this is to focus the bulb filament in viewer while rotating the light
housing and bring it in center. Then try to focus on the prepared surface.
PM-1 is supplied with two objectives 10 x,
and 40 x along with a 10 x eyepiece. A combination of either of the objectives
produces 100x or 400 x magnification. Switching from one magnification to
another is done by unscrewing one objective and replaces it with other.

Pyromatic Fine Polisher
Grinder BSPIL PGP 2001
PGP-2RT is a portable pre-grinding and
polishing machine, which is easy to carry to work site. It enables
metallographer to prepare suitable metallographic quality surfaces on large
components such as castings, forging, welds, pipes etc. by grinding with silicon
carbide paper discs followed by polishing with diamond paste applied to special
cloth discs.
PGP-2RT has a variable speed control to
enable speed variation for rough grinding at high speeds & fine grinding at low
speeds. It has a 30mm diameter rubber tip to which grinding paper or polishing
cloth discs can be attached. These disks are supplied with a pressure sensitive
adhesive back for easy attachment & detachment from the rubber tip.
Procedure For Use
PGP-2RT is delivered in a fully assembled,
ready to use condition. A three pin (5A, 230V), plug has been provided on the
power supply cord, which is detachable from the grinder. Plug it in a suitable
socket & flick the mains on/off switch to on position. Now turn the speed
control knob slowly from low to high, increasing the speed gradually.
One 30mm rubber tip is already fixed to the
chuck of grinder this tip can adopt a 32mm diameter polishing paper &
cloth-discs. 20 nos. of each type of discs are supplied with the machine.
Pre Grinding
First grind the spot which is to be prepared
with a conventional grinder to a level surface. Finish the surface with an angle
disc grinder affixed with 100 mm diameter discs of 80/120-grit. Use the edge of
the disk to obtain directional scratches while changing the direction with each
grit size. Thoroughly clean the spot of all loose dust/debris with a cleaner,
after polishing with each grit paper disk. Mark the area of interest & restrict
further work only to the marked area. Metal engraver can also be used to mark
the spot number in an indelible manner, for further reference, which is often
required in, for example, Life Assessment studies.
Fine Polishing
If you are following only mechanical
polishing route, then use the 32-mm dia silicon carbide paper discs having
80/120/220/320 and 500-size grit. Further polishing is done with Diamond
polishing paste. Diamond polishing can obtain 1 micron or better finish.
Polishing with 1micron diamond paste suffices for routine work. First polish
with 6-micron diamond paste followed by 3-micron paste using lubricant specially
formulated to give best dispersion of diamond particles & also to remove debris
during polishing. Use cloth discs for 6 3 & 1 micron paste. Remove the paste &
debris by dousing the surface with methanol, AR grade (Free from moisture).
Quickly dry the surface by using hot air blower, delay may stain the surface &
spoil it. The prepared surface can now be either chemically or electrolytically
etched.

Electrolytic Polishing & Etching Equipment -
PEP BSPIL 2001
If you are following the mechanical &
electrolytic polishing route, then after completing the pre-grinding with PGP-1
up to 500 grit, switch over straight away to a one step process of Electrolytic
Polishing with PEP-1, the Portable Electrolytic Polishing & Etching Equipment.
The PEP-1 is capable of producing highly polished surfaces within few minutes.
PEP-1 is a versatile instrument, which
facilitates a variable voltage and current combination. The instrument is
equipped with a timer device, which shows cumulative time in seconds, for
etching or polishing operations. Pressing the reset switch takes the timer to
zero. The V/A switch enables monitoring voltage or current respectively, on the
LED display. A selector switch enables change from polishing to etching mode,
the polishing mode being identified by a glowing LED indicator near its socket.
Electrolytic Polishing
Connect the instrument to a three pin
(230V, 5A) power supply. Connect the lead of polishing tip, and the earthing
lead to their respective sockets. Fix the earthing clamp to the test object. Pot
magnet can be used instead of clamp on ferromagnetic materials. Now instrument
is ready for polishing. Affix one of the polishing tip sheaths (PS), to the
polishing tip with rubber band, then dip the sheathed tip into the specially
prepared polishing liquid for this equipment (PL-1), till the sheath gets
soaked.
Apply the soaked polishing tip to the
preground area (500-grit finish). Hold it vertical, while lightly touching the
surface with the tip. Now switch the PEP-1 on; press the selector switch to
polishing mode (P). Slowly increase the voltage to appropriate value & swirl
the tip on its axis clockwise and anticlockwise quickly. Shift the point of
contact to cover more area, if required. A large area can thus be covered in a
short time. Remove the excess liquid from the polished surface, using Methanol
(AR grade) and quickly dry the surface with hot air blower to prevent staining.
This dry surface is now ready for etching by chemical or electrolytic method.
Etching
Chemical Etching
All conventional etchants may be used for on
site metallography work. Use swabbing technique with a clean cotton ball. Do not
rub the surface with the cotton ball. Wash the excessive etchant with Methanol
AR grade, free from moisture. Dry the spot with hot air blower to prevent
staining. A slightly deeper etch is desirable for use with replica technique.
Electrolytic Etching
A simple technique of electrolytic etching
is to slowly reduce the voltage while in polishing mode using PL-1, to an
appropriate value (for example 5 to 6 volts for mild and alloy steels,) and hold
for 10-15 seconds.
Alternatively special electrolytes can be
used as etchants along with cotton swabs placed in the cup like cavity of the
etching probe. Connect the lead of the probe to its socket. Press the selector
switch once when the indicator LED switches off indicating that the instrument
is in Etching mode. Lightly touch the polished spot with tip of the probe, which
should be soaked in the etchant periodically to keep the spot cool. The timer
will start count as soon as the circuit is completed and will stop upon breaking
it. The count will resume to give cumulative time until timer is reset.
Most of etching operations including 10%
oxalic acid as per ASTM-262 practice A can be performed with EPE-1.
