Variable compression petrol engine test rig is complete with a swinging field dynamometer, and other instrumentations along with loading Rheostat.
Compression Ratio:
Compression ratio in any Engine plays very important role in terms of its performance and efficiency. This petrol engine is spark ignition type and is converted into variable compression engine.
Compression ratio can be varied from 2.5:1 to 10:1. A specially designed cylinder head replaces the original head of Petrol Engine, which has a piston with screw rod connection at top. The compression ratio is varied by raising and lowering the piston (additional head) assembly by means of captive nut operated by a hand wheel. This method of varying the compression ratio ensures that the general shape of the combustion chamber is distorted to the minimum extent by change in the ratio. The position of cylinder (additional) assembly is indicated by a micrometer reading and from this reading the compression ratio is obtained from a chart provided with test rig.
All structural parts are designed to have a ample strength to withstand the high cylinder pressure that can occur at high compression ratio.

Description and Specifications:
Engine and dynamometer are coupled directly and mounted on a strong base and provided with anti vibration pads. Electrical Components, fuel measurement and air measurement systems are mounted on a panel with stand.
Engine:
> Single Cylinder, four stroke, petrol engine, Spark ignition.
> 3000 rpm
> Stroke-66.7cm.
> Fuel Tank Capacity - 4.5 Liters.
Variable Compression Head:
Cast iron, specially designed with micrometer, captive nut, hand wheel, rods, gaskets, spark plug housing etc.,
Swinging Field Dynamometer:
D.C. Generator, Rating - 1.5 KW
Speed - 3000rpm, shunt excited
Voltage - 220 Volts (Armature & Field)
Current - 7 amps (Armature) and 1 Amp-Field.
D.C. Generator is coupled directly to Engine and Supported between two extended shafts with trunion bearings. Dynamometer is complete with sparing balance, dashpot, counter weights, Hand wheel, pointer etc.
Control Panel and Instrumentation:
01. Fuel Measurement System: It comprises of a burette, 3 way cock, fuel pipes, and fuel tank with cock.
02. Air Measurement System: It comprises of following Air Tank.
- 35 cm x 35cm x 40cm, with
- dia phragm
- Orifice Plate -Brass.
Manometer - U -tube water filled, 30 cm, glass and pipe nipples, adopters, hoses, clamps and connecting pipes.
03. Engine Cooling System: Fins are provided on cylinder head.
04. Exhaust System: A long, smooth bent exhaust pipe is provided with chrome plated silencer. Provision is made to fix exhaust gas calorimeter.
05. Temperature Measurement: Bimetal, Capillary type, dial type Thermometers are provided at appropriate points.

Loading Rheostat: Wire wound resistors with fixed valve can be switched on one by one to load dynamometer. Step by step.
Step load - 200 watts, 8 Nos.
Switching - Rotary switches, 15 Amps, 8 Nos.
Rheostat is complete with box, fuses, and terminals.
Faculty Required: Water connections to calorimeter.
Coupled to DC GENERATOR of 2 KW with Accessories.
